It was founded in 1694 as a merchant town to serve the Habsburg Petrovaradin Fortress on the opposite bank of the Danube River. The old center of Novi Sad has many restored merchant mansions, churches and civic buildings with some of the main roads dedicated to pedestrians which make it easy to explore.
