Vienna

Vienna, Austria - 2022 Danube River cruise. Vienna is the largest city on the Danube River and one of the best preserved of the old western European capitals. The old city has lots of Baroque buildings, parks and infrastructure dating back to the Habsburg rule of Empress Maria Theresia (1740 - 1780) and up to the end of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918. The Danube River runs through the city and in the 19th century a flood control canal was built parallel to the river creating a 21km long island park and recreation area. Vienna is a city renowned for its artistic and intellectual legacy (Mozart, Beethoven, and Sigmund Freud), its architecture (Imperial Palace, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and the State Opera House) and its history as the joint capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. We spent most of a day walking through the old city or Ring Boulevard.
