Carnuntum Archaeological Park, Austria - 2022 Danube River cruise. Carnuntum was a Roman legionary fortress first established in 6 AD and eventually became an important Roman settlement and a large city with a population 50,000 inhabitants. Around 350 AD Carnuntum suffered severe earthquake damage and in 375 AD was destroyed by Germanic invaders. It was eventually abandoned and forgotten.
Today it is an Archaeological Park with a museum, exposed ruins and reconstructed buildings.
