My first caving (spelunking) experience was in Alberta, Canada in the 1970s when a few friends would go camping for a weekend and explore various caves found on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains. My more recent caving experiences have been more like guided tours but have nonetheless provided a glimpse at the many wonders that are underground.
Humans have used caves throughout history for shelter, burial grounds, religious shrines and more.
The often weird beauty of cave formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, flow stones, rivers, ice formations, small passage ways and large caverns all make going underground exciting.
