Golubac Fortress, Serbia - 2022 Danube River cruise. Golubac Fortress is at the upper entrance to the Iron Gate gorge. It was an important military border stronghold in the area allowing control over all roads and waterways connecting the east and the west. The steep cliffs on which the fort was built and the Danube River both provided natural protection. At various times the fortress was controlled by Hungary, Serbia and Ottoman Empire. Major reconstruction work was done between 2011 and 2016
