South Africa - 2008

In August 2008 we traveled to southern Africa spending most of the time in South Africa and also visiting Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and Chobe National Park in Botswana. Photos of Victoria Falls and Chobe day 1 and day 2

We spent 10 days at Kwaggashoek Game Ranch which is near Ladysmith in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. During those 10 days we went on a number of game drives and other exploration trips through the game ranch. This private ranch has open grasslands, mountains, valleys and a number of watering holes. Animals roam freely within the ranch and the lodges. Meals, accommodation and service were all first class. Photos of Kwaggashoek

While we spent most of our days photographing the wild life, we did a bit of trophy hunting. The hunt was arranged through Kukuzans Hunting Safaris who provided a professional hunter/guide, a tracker and other support staff. Photos of Hunting

During our stay at Kwaggashoek Game Ranch we took a number of day trips to places like Durban, Clarens in the Eastern Free State Highlands and Lesotho. Photos are Durban and the area around the Ranch.

Sani Pass is a frontier area between the South African border post at the bottom of the pass and Lesotho immigration post at the top of the pass. A 4X4 is a must even in good weather because the road bends though almost 1,000 meters climb over eight kilometres. Photos or Sani Pass

Nambiti Game Reserve is a privately run game reserve in the Elandslaagte area outside Ladysmith in the Northern KwaZulu Natal Midlands. It covers more than 20,000 acres and includes a variety of savannah, grasslands and thornveld.  It claims to have the “Big Five”, rare birds, plans game and more. We didn’t see any cats but we did see a lot of other game. Photos of Nambiti
