MEXICO February 2019
I was involved in a Habitat for Humanity Global Village build in El Monteón Mexico which is located in the state of Nayarit, about 60km north of Puerto Vallarta. The Habitat Team spent 5 days working on a house (Habitat Build) and while working on the house we stayed in Rincón de Guayabitos which is a tourist town a few kilometers north of El Monteón. We were able to do a little bit of touring around the immediate area. After the build my wife joined me and we stayed on in Guayabitos for an additional two weeks for a little bit of sunshine and relaxation. Rincón de Guayabitos is a former fishing village which is located in the state of Nayarit, about 70km north of Puerto Vallarta. It is now one of the most visited tourist destinations in the state of Nayarit. It has two kilometers of beach and lots of good restaurants. The town of Los Ayala is immediately to the south and La Peņita to the north. I stayed in a nice boutique hotel called Villa Bella Vista del Mar. It is on the beach, has five suites and is in the residential zone but still within walking distance to the hotel and commercial area. La Peñita de Jaltemba or simply La Peñita is a small town immediately north of Guayabitos. It is a commercial town with banks and other public facilities while Guayabitos is a resort town with hotels and tourist shops. Each Thursday a tianguis or street market happens in Peñita. It is one of the largest tianguis in the region and sells tourist foods, fresh fruits, meat, fish, vegetables, clothing, hardware and much more. Also see La Peñita Cemetery. On the Saturday following the build the team took a trip north of Guayabitos to visit the archaeological petroglyphs site of Altavista known as “La Pila Del Rey”. I did a day trip to San Blas which was once a Spanish naval base and port. We did a guided boat trip through the estuary and mangrove swamps of the La Tovara Reserve at San Blas. From 1789 to 1795, San Blas was responsible for establishing and maintaining the Spanish Fort San Miguel at Nootka Sound on what is now Vancouver Island. In 2015 I visited Nootka Sound. My photos of Nootka SoundI also took a few photos of the many birds and flowers in the area as well as a few sunsets.
